The Cognitive Busy Box was conceived based on an experience I had with my mom and a desire to find a connection. She frequently would move around with a basket of picture. She would sit down and look through them. It didn't take long to realize that we could make a connection with her by talking about the pictures. I didn't know it at the time, but we were helping her with Reminiscent Therapy.
When we would sit together, it was clear she didn't really know the names of the people or places, but she would smile with a form of recognition. The connection was born. She enjoyed the interaction. I ultimately made her a scrapbook of picture, but that basket was her favorite.
Fast forward 18 years working in senior care and after listening to families I advise on care needs, I remembered the emotion of those days my mom & I spent looking through her pictures. As I listen to families struggling with how to engage their loved ones with dementia, it occurred to me that we need a better solution for our seniors with dementia. We need a way for families and their loved ones to connect. And help reduce anxiety and boredom. If possible...without pharmaceuticals.
The idea of The Cognitive Busy Box was born!
We want to help families make these connections and potentially reduce the anxiety that so many people with dementia experience.
Not only did Amanda have a mom with Alzheimer's, but she also worked for 18 years in memory care and assisted living. She would often say to her staff, "residents first, tasks second". Meaning, if a resident was having a hard day, it was more important to sit with that resident for 15-20 minutes than to make sure the laundry was done.
This is why we include instructions with each shipment. How you present the items in The Cognitive Busy Box is just as important as what is in the box. We will help you make it easy to reduce anxiety and boredom for the person with dementia. There may still be days that are hard, but our testing has shown us that even people that are less verbal will respond to the interactions and multi-sensory engagement.
We are creating a community of helpers on Facebook to work together. Like our page and to be part of our network. Join us and let's help each other to help our loved ones with dementia.
